At English Summer, we want to make the whole process as easy as possible for you. One key step after Brexit is obtaining the new ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) visa, which is mandatory for all European Union citizens.
This guide will walk you through how to apply for the ETA step by step, how much it costs, and what you’ll need to have ready so your child can travel without any complications.
What is the UK ETA visa?
The ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) is a digital travel permit recently introduced by the UK Government. It will be mandatory for all EU citizens wishing to travel to the UK, even if they’re only staying for a few days to attend a camp or summer course.
How to apply for an ETA for children travelling to the UK
✅ Step 1: Access the official ETA portal
You can do this via the official UK Government website or by downloading their mobile app.
✅ Step 2: Fill in the form
You’ll need the child’s personal details, a valid passport, and you’ll have to specify that the reason for travel is educational.
✅ Step 3: Upload a recent photo
Take a clear, up-to-date photo of your child using your phone. The platform will tell you if it meets the required criteria.
✅ Step 4: Pay the fee
The ETA currently costs £10 (approximately €12). Payment is made securely online using a credit or debit card.
✅ Step 5: Wait for approval
The response usually arrives quickly. Once approved, the ETA is electronically linked to the child’s passport.
How long is the ETA valid for?
The ETA is valid for 2 years or until the passport expires—whichever comes first. So if your child travels to the UK again during that period, you won’t need to apply for it again.
